ZZ Watering
Think of your ZZ as a succulent or cactus. This hardy plant can go months without a drink and still look amazing, so water only when the soil is fully, completely dry.
What makes the ZZ so tough? Its roots! Instead of thin, stringy roots like many houseplants, ZZs grow thick rhizomes that look a lot like little potatoes. These “potatoes” act as built-in hydration tanks, storing moisture incredibly well — which is why overwatering is pretty much the only way to upset this plant. Treating it to weekly waterings like the rest of your collection can overwhelm those rhizomes and lead to root rot.
So go ahead, let your ZZ dry out. It actually prefers the neglect.
ZZ Plant Lighting
ZZ plants are wonderfully flexible when it comes to light. They thrive in bright, indirect light, but they’re just as content hanging out in low-light corners. That’s why they’re a go-to for apartments with limited windows, cozy offices, or even bathrooms that don’t get much natural light.
They’ll grow faster with more light, of course, but they don’t rely on it to stay happy. Unlike some fussier foliage plants, ZZs are true survivors — perfectly suited for darker spaces and totally capable of fending for themselves.
