Bird of Paradise Watering

Bird of Paradise plants like consistent moisture, but they shouldn’t sit in soggy soil. Let the top 1–2 inches of soil dry out before watering again,  which is usually every 5–7 days in summer and 10–14 days in winter, depending on light and temperature.  Use well-draining soil and a pot with drainage holes, and empty any excess water from the saucer. Distilled or filtered water is recommended, as these plants can be sensitive to mineral buildup.

Average indoor humidity is usually just fine, though 40–60% humidity helps keep the leaves looking glossy and lush.

A few signals from your plant:

  • Yellow leaves or soft stems can mean it’s getting too much water
  • Drooping leaves or crispy edges can be a sign it’s ready for a drink

Strong, healthy growth is the first step toward future blooms as the plant matures.

 Bird of Paradise Lighting Care

Bird of Paradise plants love bright light. Aim for 4–6 hours of bright, indirect light daily to keep your plant thriving and to support blooms over time.  Place near a south- or east-facing window, where it can enjoy plenty of light while being protected from harsh midday summer sun. If leaves grow long and thin or the plant seems slow to grow, it may need a brighter spot.

Rotate the plant every few weeks for even growth. If natural light is limited, placing a grow light 12–24 inches above the plant for 12–16 hours a day can be beneficial.

Bird of Paradise plants typically bloom only after they mature and receive abundant light, a process that can take several years indoors.
