DIY: How to Upcycle Candle Jars into Planters

Is your candle obsession just as strong as your plant obsession? If so, we have the perfect DIY project for you!  We know it’s hard to pass up a candle that not only smells delicious but also matches your home decor. Candles come in all sorts of cute containers, but what do you do with them when the wax has burned away? Used candle jars can be great for holding beauty products, pens, and even plants! Follow these three easy steps to turn your old candles into decorative planters. 

Step 1: Dispose of leftover wax and clean the container

There are a couple of ways to get rid of the remaining candle wax once your candle has lived out its life. The first option is to place the candle in warm water or light the wick, wait for the wax to melt, and pour out the remaining wax. 

To skip the mess of dealing with melted wax, try freezing the candle for a few hours. Once the candle has had time to set in the freezer, the remaining wax should easily chip out with a knife or similar tool. 

When a large portion of the wax is removed, use soap and warm water to clean out any excess wax that is still hanging around. 

Step 2: Add drainage capabilities

While it would be ideal to drill a drainage hole in the bottom of the container, most candle jars are ceramic or glass and would crack if you try to drill into them. Many houseplants do not like to have wet feet and require the ability to drain, so the next best option is to add a natural form of drainage to the bottom of the jar,  such as a layer of rocks. 

When choosing plants to use in your upcycled candle planters, we suggest leaving out the moisture-loving plants and using drought-tolerant plants such as succulents and cacti. 

Step 3: Add potting mix, your plant, and enjoy
