Wild Interiors Celebrates International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day is recognized globally as a day to honor and recognize the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It is a day to support women’s charities and to call attention to women’s rights and gender equality. At Wild Interiors, we’re celebrating International Women’s Day by introducing you to some of the women behind our brand. From marketing to operations, to research and development to growing, there are so many women who work hard every day to bring Wild Interiors plants to your home!

The Women Behind Wild Interiors

AshleighGomez.jpg

Ashleigh Gomez

is a Section Grower and Chemical Consultant that has been with Wild Interiors for going on 8 years. She studied biology and 3D arts at Bowling Green State University.

When asked what Ashleigh loves about working in the horticulture industry, she says:

“I love working in the horticulture industry for many reasons – the interesting plant varieties, the fascinating people and stories they have to tell about the trade, and the ever-growing information that is out there. There is always something to learn and explore in this field.”

Ashleigh’s favorite Wild Interiors plant (which changes frequently) is the coffee plant! “How cool is it to be able to have your own coffee plant growing in your kitchen!?”

Martha.jpg

Martha Ward

is a Wild Interiors Grower that has been in the horticulture industry for 35 years! Martha has been rooted in the horticulture industry since high school, starting in seed sowing, planting, production, and shipping. She quickly worked her way up to an assistant grower and now grower. She thrived learning from other growers, industry conventions, and horticulture classes at Michigan State. Martha is “homegrown” within our company and we are so lucky to have her.

When asked what Martha loves about working in the horticulture industry, she says:

I love to watch the plants root and grow by providing them the right light, fertilization, water, and space needed in their everyday care. It is so satisfying to watch them grow from their first planting to their final journey of shipping out of our facilities.

Martha’s favorite Wild Interiors plants are succulents, especially the combo pots!

Sarah Humke

is the Research and Development Manager for Wild Interiors and has been with the company for just over a year. She has a bachelor’s degree in Greenhouse Management from the University of Florida and has worked in the industry for nearly 30 years. (She had her own greenhouse at the age of 15!)

When asked what it means to be a woman in the horticulture industry, she says;

When I started my career in horticulture, women were still in the minority in nearly all sectors of the field. It’s been amazing to see how many more women there are in the industry now and how many are taking leadership roles in major companies and organizations.

When asked what Sarah loves about working in the horticulture industry, she says:

I love working with both plants and people so my job is really just about perfect for me. I love finding new varieties of foliage plants and growing them and testing them out to see if they will do well in a person’s home. I love being around people who get just as geeked-out as I do over new plant varieties.  I’m so excited to be a part of the foliage renaissance!

Sarah’s favorite Wild Interiors plant is… You can’t have a favorite plant! That’s like having a favorite child (I lie, I totally have a favorite. It’s pretty much all the Sansevierias. My nickname could be “Sansevieria Sarah”. )

Hannah.jpg

Hannah Heard

is a Grower that has been with Wild Interiors for over 9 years. She has a Bachelor of Science in Horticulture from West Virginia University and grew up with summer jobs in landscaping, greenhouses, and garden centers.

When asked what it means to be a woman in the horticulture industry, she says;

I am very proud to be a female in this industry. Representation matters. I love giving tours to college students and seeing them blown away by the facilities and also seeing the female students and professors so excited and relieved to see a female peer thriving.

When asked what Hannah loves about working in the horticulture industry, she says:

My favorite part of the job is watching a crop grow from a tiny transplant to a full-sized plant. When they get shipped out and I see them in stores, I can say, “Hey- I grew that!”

Hannah says it is too hard to choose her favorite Wild Interiors plant. She loves them all!
