Is It Ok to Move Your Indoor Plants Around?

You may be wondering if it is ok to move your indoor plants around. The answer is yes, but make sure to keep your plants' needs in mind and try to only move them sparingly!

Most plants will not mind relocating if their basic needs are being met. However, you may run into some issues if you are constantly moving your plants around. Keep in mind when decorating with houseplants that disrupting your plants’ peace by moving it around frequently or repotting it too often can be detrimental to their health and happiness. Follow these tips to set your plants up for the best success when rearranging your space.

Tips for Moving Your Plants Around

  1. Know your plants’ needs. Look up the specific light, humidity, water, and temperature needs for each variety and place them in a spot where they will thrive.

  2. Assess the lighting. The amount of light and heat a plant receives will directly affect how much moisture it will need and retain between waterings. If a plant requires lots of light and is moved to a dark room, it will not receive enough energy for it to keep growing. A light-loving plant that is moved to a lower light environment may survive for a few weeks, but it will not be happy in the long run.

  3. Make sure your plant is healthy. Check the roots of your plants before moving them, ensuring it is healthy enough to withstand a move. Some plants are more delicate than others, so they may not have the stamina to withstand a big move.

  4. Repot if needed. When taking the time to check the health and roots of your plant, you may realize that your plant is outgrowing its current digs. Take this time to move any plants that need it to larger pots. This can be a great opportunity to change up the look of your plant with a fun new pot.

How to Display and Decorate with Houseplants

Once you have assessed and prepped your plants for a move, you’re ready to start rearranging. Plants have the ability to completely transform a space, so arranging them to look their best is key! Follow these tips to get the most out of your freshly curated indoor jungle.

  • Keep your plants in cliques. Arrange them in groups using different heights and sizes to create a dynamic scene.

  • Anchor a room with large floor plants. Placing larger plants in vacant corners will draw the eye upward, creating movement from floor to ceiling.

  • Go vertical. Use hooks, hangers, and side tables to create a cohesive and natural look.

  • Shelf it. Make a mix and match shelf of your favorite foliage. This eclectic display can be ever-changing and there’ll always be room to squeeze “one more” in! Keeping plants up on a shelf and out of reach is also important for homes with children and pets, as some houseplants can be toxic.
